The "function" and "notion" of literacy may be considered the keystone, a "filigree" principle underlying the educational, social, and cultural organiza tion of the societies of the twentieth century. It is therefore interesting to try to pinpoint the notion and its implications at the tum of the century by focusing the attention of scholars from various disciplines-sociolinguistics, psychology, psycholinguistics, and pedagogy-on the subject. This is the purpose of this volume, which originated from an inter disciplinary meeting on trends in and problems of research on early literacy through mother tongues and/or second languages, held in Venice under the auspices of the University of Venice, and in particular of the Seminario di Linguistica e di Didattica della Lingue and the Centro Linguistico Interfacolta, and the Municipality of Venice, together with UNESCO and AILA. A first far-reaching question touches on the role assigned to or fulfilled by mass "literacy" in modem society. The concept of literacy considered as a social achievement, an essential component in the process of education to be institutionally prompted and controlled, fluctuates between two opposite poles. A polemic-destructive view considers the notion and the educational "prac tices" connected with it as a potent instrument of social control, a tool for social reproduction and consensus. On the other side, a plurifunctional con structive view considers the acquisition and maintenance of different languages via educational institutions as a concrete possibility for the defense and main tenance of cultural pluralism and identity, be it social, ethnic, or religious.

This book comprises a synthesis of current directions in reading research, theory, and practice unified by what has been referred to as the engagement perspective of reading. This perspective guides the research agenda of the National Reading Research Center (NRRC), a consortium of the University of Georgia, University of Maryland, and affiliated scholars. A major goal of the book is to introduce reading researchers to the engagement perspective as defined by the NRRC and to illustrate its potential to integrate the cognitive, social, and motivational dimensions of reading and reading instruction. Engaged readers are viewed as motivated, strategic, knowledgeable, and socially interactive. They read widely for a variety of purposes and capitalize on situations having potential to extend literacy. The book is organized into four sections representing key components of the NRRC research agenda and the engagement perspective. This perspective emphasizes contexts that influence engaged reading. Accordingly, the first section of the volume focuses on the social and cultural contexts of literacy development, with chapters devoted to examining home influences, home-school connections, and the special challenges facing ethnic minorities. The engagement perspective also implies greater attention to the role of motivational and affective dimensions in reading development than traditional views of reading. Therefore, the second section examines motivational theory and its implications for reading engagement, with special attention to characteristics of classroom contexts that promote motivation in reading. The engagement perspective embraces innovative instructional contexts that address the cognitive, social, and motivational aspects of reading. Thus, the third section includes chapters on current directions in promoting children's learning from text, on the value of an integrated curriculum in promoting reading engagement, and on the challenges of assessing students' development as engaged readers. Finally, the broader conception of reading implied by the engagement perspective requires an expanded array of research approaches, sensitive to the complex and interacting contexts in which children develop literacy. The concluding section focuses on these important contemporary issues in literacy research and educational research, with chapters examining the variety of alternative modes of inquiry gaining prominence in literacy research, teacher inquiry, and ethical issues of collaboration between university and teacher researchers. Constructions of Literacy explores and represents, through a series of cases and commentaries, how and why secondary school teachers and students use literacy in formal and informal learning settings. As used in the context of this book, secondary literacy refers to speaking, listening, reading, writing, and performing. It also refers to how these processes or events are constructed, negotiated, and used for specific purposes by teachers and students as they engage in various classroom, school, and community practices and interactions. The authors operate from a stance that literacy is socially, culturally, and historically constructed. They recognize that there are many different perspectives on how that construction occurs--some arguing for institutional and structural influences--others suggesting that people have some degree of agency within the constraints imposed by larger structures. A distinguishing feature of the volume is that the contributors explore and make explicit differing perspectives on literacy as a social construction. Die Studie zeigt anhand vorliegender empirischer Untersuchungen, daß grammatisches Wissen nicht mit expliziten schulgrammatischen Kenntnissen gleichgesetzt werden darf. Soweit in diesem Wissen wirklich Sprachliches in das Blickfeld kommt, liegt ihm spezifisch syntaktische Information zugrunde, die ohne Beteiligung grammatischer Analysen gewonnen wurde. Es wird ein empirisches Verfahren entwickelt, welches darauf abzielt, das Vorliegen solcher Information unmittelbar, also ohne Verwendung schulgrammatischer Termini, zu erfassen. Auf seiner Grundlage werden Daten in Haupt- und Realschulklassen der Jahrgangsstufen 5-7 erhoben. Die Ergebnisse sprechen dafür, daß syntaktische Information fast ubiquitär zugänglich ist, daß ein Umgang mit ihr, der sie zuverlässig verfügbar werden läßt, aber gleichwohl erlernt werden muß. Hier liegt der Punkt, in dem sich erfolgreiche und weniger erfolgreiche Lerner unterscheiden. Die Befunde werden in einem Datenmodell interpretiert, das auf der Annahme beruht, daß das Entstehen spezifisch syntaktischer Information Ergebnis einer Art von Resonanz rezenter sprachlicher Muster ist. Für den muttersprachlichen Grammatikunterricht ergibt sich, daß seine indirekten Einflüsse auf sprachliches Lernen möglicherweise größer sind als die direkten. Ein methodischer Neuansatz könnte darin liegen, mit grammatischen Problemen und sprachlichen Intuitionen unmittelbar, ohne Umweg über schulgrammatische Klassifikationen, zu arbeiten.
