The Drift: Bonded By: Anne Nicholas and J.J. Robinson Donovan Ashwood wishes he was just a normal teenager. He already has the usual problems of an overbearing father, a bully at school, and, of course, school itself. On top of that, Donovan carries the guilt of his mother dying while giving birth to him. He tries to find solace in his only two friends: Brendan and Britney Palmer, twins with high IQs and a similar low social standing. But even that has problems because of the “more than friends” feelings he harbors for Britney. Donovan also has a supernatural problem. When he is of age, he will have the drift — the ability to turn, at will, into a seven-foot-tall werewolf. His father tries to guide Donovan and help prepare him for the drift, but strange events begin happening to him, culminating in a tragic event that turns his life upside down, opening up a new world he never even knew existed. Donovan will have to become much more than the normal teenager he longs to be and learn about his unusual and unexplainable power and how to control it — or else put his friends and himself in danger.

The Second Edition of The Drift of Sea Ice presents the fundamental laws of sea ice drift which come from the material properties of sea ice and the basic laws of mechanics. The resulting system of equations is analysed for the general properties of sea ice drift, the free drift model and analytical models for ice drift in the presence of internal friction, and the construction of numerical ice drift models is detailed. This second edition of a much lauded work, unique on this topic in the English language, has been revised, updated and expanded with much new information and outlines recent results, in particular in relation to the climate problem, mathematical modelling and ice engineering applications. The current book presents the theory, observations, mathematical modelling techniques, and applications of sea ice drift science. The theory is presented from the beginning on a graduate student level, so that students and researchers coming from other fields such as physical oceanography, meteorology, physics, engineering, environmental sciences or geography can use the book as a source book or self-study material. First the drift ice material is presented ending with the concept of ‘ice state’ – the relevant properties in sea ice dynamics. Ice kinematics observations are widely presented with the mathematical analysis methods, and thereafter come drift ice rheology – to close the triangle material – kinematics – stress. The momentum equation of sea ice is derived in detail and its general properties are carefully analysed. Then follow two chapters on analytical models: free drift and drift in the presence of internal friction: These are very important tools in understanding the dynamical behaviour of sea ice. The last topical chapter is numerical models, which are the modern tool to solve ice dynamics problem in short term and long term problems. The closing chapter summarises sea ice dynamics applications and the need of sea ice dynamic knowledge and gives some final remarks on the future of this branch of science.

Liverpool, 1958, and German refugee and inventor Ernst Frager is in search of a sense of belonging. What he finds is an unusual nightclub on the Mersyside docks, and Miranda: hat-check girl, aspiring jazz singer and daughter of West Indian immigrants. Their doomed love affair will have repercussions for the children waiting for Ernst back in London, but also for the daughter Miranda gives birth to. Almost half a century later, Jade finds herself grappling with the very questions that drove her father into the arms of her mother, and realising that a successful career cannot define an identity; nor can you separate your existence from all the many other stories connected to it ... Like the jazz that snakes its way though this beautiful novel, The Drift Latitudes is about how we improvise our lives and the chances we take. From the Nubian boy who flees the tedium of home to find the bright lights of New York's jazz scene, to Ernst's daughter Rachel who turns her back on Europe and follows her husband to the Sudan, it is about the movement of people around our globe and the interdependence of our dreams. Awash with memorable characters, filled with unputdownable stories, this is a brilliantly intricate novel that lingers in the mind long after its final note.

The Drift: Affect, Adaptation, and New Perspectives on Fidelity offers a new perspective on the complex interrelations between literature and cinema. It does so by articulating an 'affective turn' for adaptation studies, a field whose traditional focus has been the critical castigation of film adaptations of canonical plays or novels. Drawing on theorists such as Gilles Deleuze, Brian Massumi, and Marco Abel, the author is able to re-conceive literary and cinematic works as textual engines generating and circulating affect, and the adaptive process as a drifting of those affective intensities from one medium to another. By conceptualizing adaptation in this manner, the work steers clear of the chimerical notion of 'fidelity' (to character, to theme, to narrative) which has anchored so many analyses of adaptive texts over the years—and the reproving language that inevitably attends it—in favor of more productive avenues of investigation: What affective work are certain literary and filmic texts performing? What can this tell us, more broadly, about the underexplored affective dimensions of literature and cinema, and the dialogic interactions between them? The Drift addresses such questions through close, careful readings which put a variety of realist, modernist, and postmodernist works into conversation with each other, among them the fiction of John Dos Passos, Don DeLillo, and Susanna Moore, the films of Dziga Vertov and Sergei Eisenstein, as well as recent cinematic adaptations by Jane Campion and Charles Burnett. This methodological approach, helps to elevate adaptation studies into a discourse that speaks more directly and pertinently to our fluid, hypertextual era.

The poems in Jenkins' collection are closely linked, forming an intensely personal book in which the narrator contrasts the grand ambitions of his youth with the realities of life: friends and relations dead, loves lost, opportunities missed.

Somewhere in the heart of the Sargasso Sea, according to legend, there lies a calm body of water where all the wrecked ships of history find their way. Peter Sutherland, a youngish college professor weathering his first divorce, takes a Caribbean cruise in search of relaxation. Suddenly, a violent storm comes up, and sweeps him out into the Atlantic, clinging to a small rowboat. After many days, he is rescuedby the gentle people who live on the Drift, a floating city of French brigantines, Spanish galleons, English caravels, and Portugese men-of-war, hidden for hundreds of years at the center of the Sargasso Sea. Although incredulous at first, Peter slowly falls under the spell of the beguiling paradise in which he has awakened, a process hastened by the presence of Pao, a bewitching, dark-haired girl of seventeen who hopes to charm him so completely that he will never want to leave her. As his love for Pao deepens, Peter's mind and senses grow strangely alive, and he finds himself immersed in a world of feeling and intuition he has never known. Both frightened and attracted by the power of the Drift, Peter must finally wrestle with the dilemma of how, and whether, to return to the land-locked life from which he has been both exiled and released. Beneath the hauntingly lovely surface of this novel, the author has dislodged some bedrock questions about the nature of man's life, and the choices with which we are all confronted. In Peter's agonizing attempt to decide whether the Drift is real or only a seductive hallucination, and in his dilemma of whether to stay or leave, the reader will find a disturbing echo of his own fantasies about what is "real", or possible, or even desirable, within the private Drift that each of us inhabits.
