The monks of Saint Meinrad Archabbey, like other men and women who have followed the “Rule of St. Benedict” for centuries, dedicate their lives to prayer, work, and community life based on the Gospel. They thirst for God, and with Christians everywhere, lift up their hands, call on God’s name, and say, “Lord, teach us to pray.” Thirsting for God: Prayers from a Monastery offers a sip from the deep well of contemplation available to us all. The prayers, poems, and reflections shared in this small volume express a yearning not so different from our own. Truly, our combined thirst for God reveals a cup that overflows.

Beginning in the street ministry days of the Jesus Movement, Matthew Gallatin devoted more than twenty years to evangelical Christian ministry. He was a singer/songwriter, worship leader, and Calvary Chapel pastor. Nevertheless, he eventually accepted a painful reality: no matter how hard he tried, he was never able to experience the God whom he longed to know. His was a great dream that could not find fulfillment, a deep question that could not answer itself, an eternal thirst dwelling in a land of shallow wells. In Thirsting for God, Gallatin expresses many of the struggles a Protestant will encounter in coming face to face with Orthodoxy: such things as Protestant relativism, rationalism versus the Orthodox sacramental path to God, and the unity of Scripture and Tradition. An outstanding book that will give Protestant readers a more thorough understanding of the Church.

Thirsting after God is born out of a lifetime of cross-denominational ministry around the world and indirectly out of the heart of A.W. Tozer, who discipled the author during his formative years. In the Introduction, entitled "My Mornings with Tozer", Price chronicles this influence. "I was taught to cultivate a thirst for God by my mentor Dr. A.W. Tozer", he says. These brief devotional readings affirm that he learned his lessons well. In Tozeresque style, Price focuses on 7 biblical characters -- among them Isaiah, David, Moses and Paul -- and in everyday, down-to-earth language challenges readers to follow their example of pursuing God's works and ways.

“My Soul Longs for You” contains 30 daily readings on the theme of the Christian’s longing and thirsting for more of God. Suitable for any time of year. Psalm 42: My God, I Thirst for You Day 1: Thirsting for God is Natural—and Necessary As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. (Psalm 42:1) What a beautiful picture from nature—a deer going down to the stream to drink. Nothing could be more natural than an animal’s desire to quench its thirst! It is equally as true for plants and humans as it is for the animals—water is essential for life. In Western countries, where most people have a reliable water supply connected to their homes, we have almost lost the understanding that without water, we die. But there are still many people in the majority world who travel great distances daily to find a source of water to survive. This helps us understand that the picture in this Psalm goes much deeper than mere thirst. The psalmist clearly saw that without God, he could not survive. God created everything in the beginning, and gives life to all living things. He breathed into Adam, who consequently became a living soul (Gen 2:7). Hence by nature, humankind cannot experience life without God. The tragedy of Adam’s disobedience in Eden was that humanity became separated from the source of its life, as sin broke our relationship with God. Jesus Christ came to forgive our sin, restore our relationship with God and reconnect us with the source of life. Thirsting for God is as natural—and necessary—as breathing! Prayer Lord, you created us in the beginning, and all life comes from you. We thank you for our Lord Jesus Christ, who has reconnected us with you, the source of true life. And we thank you for the desire that you have formed in our hearts, to continue to share that life with you. Our God, we thirst and long for you, and hunger to know you more. Amen.

"There is a rich tradition of wonderful women and other contemplatives who are great resources for thinking differently about Christianity. They emphasized divine love, human compassion, and the radical possibilities of contemplative practices. They were not afraid to criticize the church and indeed thought of their challenge as crucial to their faith. We do not have to lose faith with the beautiful wisdom of this story of intimate and compassionate love, dwelling among us and within us, if we do not want to." —from the acknowledgments and note to readers To those seeking a more open, progressive approach to Christian faith, the Christian past can sometimes seem like a desert, an empty space devoid of encouragement or example. Yet in the latter years of the Middle Ages a quiet flowering of a more accessible, positive approach to Christian belief took place among a group of female mystics, those who emphasized an immediate, nonhierarchical experience of the divine. In this enlightening volume, Wendy Farley eloquently brings the work of three female mystics—Marguerite Porete, Mechthild of Magdeburg, and Julian of Norwich—into creative conversation with contemporary Christian life and thought. From alternatives to the standard, violent understandings of the atonement, to new forms of contemplation and prayer, these figures offer us relevant insights through a theology centered on God's love and compassion. Farley demonstrates how these women can help to refresh and expand our awareness of the depth of divine love that encompasses all creation and dwells in the cavern of every human heart.
